Insurtech as the future infrastructure of insurance

Published 2018-11-28 · General

Online-only insurers, particularly in Asia, have shown how technology can reach customers that traditional distribution struggles to serve. By embedding small, low-cost covers into e-commerce, travel and payments, they can sell policies at very large scale.

Leaders of these platforms argue that insurtech is not just a new sales channel but the infrastructure on which future insurance will run, with automated underwriting, instant claims and products designed around digital ecosystems.

The model also creates new questions for reinsurers, including how to support high-volume micro-policies, how to price products with limited loss history and how to manage concentration in partner platforms.
